iOS 14 to support all devices currently running iOS 13
27 January 2020, 3:06 pm

Apple's iOS 14 isn't due before the company's annual WWDC in June but that hasn't stopped the first set of rumors from popping up. Back in November, we got our first iOS 14 report which detailed Apple's plans to implement a new internal process to prevent experimental new features from turning on by default. Now, a new report claims that the upcoming version of iOS will come to all the previously supported devices including the almost five-year-old iPhone 6s, the year younger iPhone SE and the 7th generation iPod touch. iOS 14 expected device list: iPhone 11 iPhone 11...

Redmi smart watch is incoming, may actually be a smart band
27 January 2020, 2:14 pm

The first Redmi smartwatch has received BIS certification in India. Or is it Redmi's first smart band? The main brand, Xiaomi, launched the Watch Color earlier this month and the Mi Band 5 is on the horizon. But there haven't been any Redmi-branded wrist-worn smart gadgets yet. BIS just calls the device a "smartwatch" (model number HMDH01GE). However, some Weibo users have picked apart the Mi Fit app and found the silhouette of a Redmi smart band. The band will feature heart rate tracking, NFC and music controls, base on info gleaned from the app. It will also have changeable watch...

Oppo's upcoming smartwatch tipped to have an ECG sensor
27 January 2020, 1:27 pm

Last month Oppo teased its first smartwatch, but said nothing about specs. Now leakster Digital Chat Station posted that the watch will feature an ECG sensor. The ElectroCardioGram (ECG) sensor detects electrical signals from your heart. With this, it can read your heart rate (beats per minute) and rhythm (regularity), it can even spot signs of atrial fibrillation. Optical heart rate sensors that are prevalent on smart watches and bands only measure heart rate (and occasionally SpO2). Apple was the first to introduce ECG capability on a smartwatch (with the Apple Watch Series 4),...

Nokia 9.2 PureView could be a return to Nokia 8 formula
27 January 2020, 12:35 pm

The Nokia 9 PureView was a flagship with high expectations that failed to deliver on multiple fronts. Arguably the biggest let down was the unreliable performance of the Light optical technology camera. Towards the beginning of the month, we heard some rumors about the Nokia 9's successor which will reportedly incorporate a Snapdragon 865 chipset and is expected to make its debut in the autumn. Now, we are getting yet another report about the device which is expected to come as the Nokia 9.2 PureView. According to the new leak, HMD will ditch the Light camera technology this time...

OnePlus details upcoming upgrades to cameras on current and future phones
27 January 2020, 10:01 am

OnePlus held an "Open Ears Forum" in New York, basically a meet-up to hear out fans on their thoughts and ideas of how the company can improve current and future OnePlus products - this specific one focused on the video capture. After some consideration, the company published a to-do list. Its first priority is to make exposure, color and white balance consistent across the three cameras (main, ultra wide and tele). This will enable future changes like "lens feature-parity" - support 4K video on all three cams and enable switching between them during recording. Also, recording with two...

The Galaxy S20 will start at €900-1,000 (€100 less for a 4G model), the Galaxy S20+ will be €1050-1,100 and the Galaxy S20 Ultra will be €1,300-1,500. We were also treated to the best-looking renders of all three devices this week - the Galaxy S20 will get a triple camera, while the Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra will have quad setups. The Galaxy S20 Ultra may not only be more...

Top 10 trending phones of week 4
26 January 2020, 8:01 pm

MWC is just around the corner, which explains why we are getting little in terms of new phone announcements these days - everybody is holding off so they can bring their A-game to the industry's largest event. This means our trending chart is reasonably stable, save for the stir caused by a particularly exciting rumored phone. Like the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which even made the top last week on the back of a series of spicy leaks. It's down to third now, replaced in the lead by the Galaxy A51 and the Redmi Note 8 Pro. In fourth we have the non-Pro half of the Note 8 family, which has just...

Nokia Power Earbuds BH-605 review
26 January 2020, 2:54 pm

After the success of Apple's AirPods almost every OEM is looking to take a chunk of the true wireless headphones market. That's further fueled by the fact that most makers have either already dropped or are on the way to drop the headphones jack. While hardly a household name in the business Nokia actually has two different TWS offerings and the one we'll be looking at right now is quite interesting. Dubbed Nokia Power Earbuds BH-605 they have a rather different take on the whole package. They are relatively reasonably priced at around €90 and the two most important standout features...

Weekly poll: can the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip convince you to move on from rigid slabs?
26 January 2020, 11:02 am

Flip phones are back with a vengeance - last year's tablet-sized folders are giving way to vertical folders. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip will be unveiled at the Unpacked event in February and it will be the first phone with Ultra Thin Glass (UTG). That may not sound like much, but the much increased scratch resistance of UTG compared to the plastic screen cover of the Galaxy Fold, Mate X and even the upcoming Motorola Razr can make the Z Flip the first practical folder. In early 2019 we were thinking that an inward folding design would be enough to protect the screen, but reality proved...

Weekly poll results: 2 in 3 interested in 5G, but slow network rollout is a big issue
26 January 2020, 7:52 am

A third of the people who voted in last week's poll plans to buy a 5G phone in 2020. Another third are still prioritizing the other features on a phone, but are not against having a 5G-capable phone. Only the final third voted a firm "no". Among those, the most common explanation as to why not is that the carriers in their country are yet to launch their next-generation networks. In many regions this will not happen this year or even next year. This limits the value of 5G connectivity from the perspective of future-proofing one's purchase. It's much better to get an awesome camera now...

Flashback: Sony Ericsson W800 and K750 showed the value of good branding
26 January 2020, 4:47 am

Sony once held some of the most valuable brand names in tech. The company practically invented the portable music player, the legendary Walkman. Also, its first digital camera came out in 1996, the Cyber-shot. However, the company didn't handle the transition to mobile phones very well. The company - or rather its 50/50 partnership with Ericsson - did try to adapt the Sony branding to mobile phones. This gave us handsets like the Sony Ericsson W800, which had "Walkman" written with large letters on its side. Not just that, it had a button with Walkman logo that launched the music...

If you miss Vine, here's its spiritual successor
26 January 2020, 1:00 am

Unfortunately for most of the Vine users, the service got the ax shortly after the acquisition from Twitter. Instagram and TikTok were fast to fill in but that 6-second duration of the clip has been missed by a lot of us who have an attention span of a goldfish. Luckily, there's a successor to Vine and it's called Byte. Perhaps the name is a clever wordplay between a small bite and an actual byte since the video clips are small. Anyway, one of Vine's co-founders is behind the project and as Android Police reported, the Byte app looks like a modern-looking blast from the past. It's...

Xiaomi Redmi 8A running Android 10 spotted on Geekbench
25 January 2020, 10:00 pm

Xiaomi's Redmi 8A received an official update with the company's latest version of MIUI 11 back in November. And although the custom skin brought a brand new look and a couple of new features, it's still based on the older Android 9 Pie. According to a Geekbench listing, however, this might soon change. The listing shows a Xiaomi Redmi 8A handset running the latest Android 10 suggesting that an update might be underway. Xiaomi hasn't disclosed a time frame in which we should expect the update but we remain hopeful with this Geekbench report. Source

Redmi K30 in for review
25 January 2020, 7:00 pm

Following up on the success of the Redmi K20 from the early summer of 2019, the company announced the K30 and K30 5G in December, with the vanilla K30 going on sale in China immediately. Well, a Redmi K30 has arrived at the office and it's straight into the lab for review. Looking at the specs, the Redmi K30 shares more of its genes with the Redmi Note 8 Pro, than it does with the K20. For example, the camera system on the back is directly lifted off of the Note and includes a 64MP main shooter, an 8MP ultrawide, and a couple of 2MP units - one for close up shots, the other for depth...
